Brisbane River Cruise to Fort Lytton Event

When: Saturday: 7th September 2024 (10am to 4 pm)

Where: Board Lady Brisbane at Stamford Plaza

​

A 6 hour return excursion from the Stamford Plaza down the Brisbane River to its mouth with a primary stop over at the Fort Lytton National Park. The outing will include a leisurely 1.5 hour cruise from the Stamford to Fort Lytton on the “Lady Brisbane”. The cruise will include a full commentary on the military and civil history and heritage associated with the Brisbane River from presettlement times to World War 2. You will learn how the Queensland Colonial government responded to the anticipated invasion by the Russians in the 1880s? You will see the site of the former American and Australian submarine base during WW2. The military significance of riverside heritage buildings such as: “Amity House”; “Shafston House”; and “Yungaba” will be explained.

The 3 hour Fort Lytton component will include an exclusive guided tour of the military precinct and a visit to the new museum of the Queensland Military Historical Society together with a series of briefings explaining the fort’s layout and structure, its architectural heritage significance and the Queensland Government’s plans for its protection through the National Park & Wildlife Service.

This event follows the ‘Relief of the Siege of Malta Commemoration,’ hosted by the Brisbane and Gold Coast Commanderies. The celebration of the Lifting of the Siege of Malta in on 8th September 1565 takes the form of a church service. It includes a guest speaker, Chevalier Robin Kleinschmidt OAM KCSJ, who will address the question of: ‘After the Siege’. The lifting of the Siege will be celebrated in the presence of the Honorary Consul of Malta for Southern Queensland.
